DIGITAL  STORYTELLING

Digital Storytelling in Plain English

Creating a Story

Students create a storyboard in which they write a story and provide pictures and/or video to illustrate their story.
Students can use pre-made pictures that either they own or are listed as copyright free. They may also include videos
that are free of copyright to help illustrate the point or idea of their overall story. From there, they organize their
pictures and/or video and incorporate them into one of the following software pieces. After the pictures/videos have
been added, students then add their narration in order to bring their story to life. The final stage is to add any
additional audio or music files and in some cases special transitions or movements throughout their movie.

StoryBoarding Templates and Processes

Storyboards are essential tools for transition planning moving the story or concepts (meaning-making) from text-based ideas to planning / designing the how the media will be danced together (media-making) into illuminated understandings. Every media element and special effect should have an important "job" in the story. The storyboard needs teacher sign off - and be expected to be visible - an "elbow tool" - during the production and post-production phase of collecting and mixing media assets. A well-planned storyboard saves time and ensures quality post-production. It is the last stop for check that rigor of content has made it from the written to the media format. If no storyboard NOT time for technology! Make the storyboard the golden "ticket" for using technology tools.
